A Steam client update is now available. To apply the update, click the File menu inside of Steam and then select 'Check for Steam Client Updates...'. The specific changes include:
Steam Client
  • Enabled ClearType fonts if they are enabled in Windows
  • Improved in-game status and play time tracking for games with launcher apps
  • Improved in-game overlay input handling in a variety of games that previously did not capture or block keyboard input correctly
  • Added D3D10 support to the in-game overlay
  • Made voice chat requests ignored if you've blocked communications from the caller
  • Fixed the original Half-Life not getting to 100% complete downloading when it should
  • Improved server selection logic for Friends and VAC server connections
  • Improved Steam network connectivity in the face of dropped UDP packets
  • Fixed the overlay not recognizing the Tab key in some games (breaking the default hot-key)
  • Improved Friends duplicate name collision detection

Jailbreak: Source Version 0.4 Released

A new version of Jailbreak: Source has been released. Version 0.4 includes four new maps (eight in total), seventeen new weapons, a completely new custom perks system (double jumping and stealth!), a completely revamped point scoring system, nearly 500 custom textures and over 100 custom models and sounds.
What is Jailbreak?
Jailbreak is simple, two teams, two jails! End up in jail? Try to escape or wait to be released! Once your whole team is in jail... It's execution time! Fight in eight unique environments, from spaceships and arctic bases, to medieval villages and neo-tokyo cities... Jailbreak!

Valve is offering a worldwide Team Fortress 2 Free Weekend that is going on now! You can join in and play the full game for free, including the new content just released in the TF2: Gold Rush Update. All you need is a Steam account to play. The Free Weekend is available to players all around the world and ends this Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 1pm PDT.

A Steam client update is now available. To apply the update, click the File menu inside of Steam and then select 'Check for Steam Client Updates...'. The specific changes include:
Steam Client
  • Added the ability to block all communications from another user
  • Added an option to timestamp friends messages
  • Added an option to configure taskbar window flashing behavior on friends messages
  • Added background detection of game updates while Steam is running
  • Fixed backups failing for certain games, and made other improvements to it

  • Fixed potential crash when launching a game and having a large chat history
  • Fixed error in client auto-updater which would incorrectly detect Steam already running, and then fail to update

Updates to Source SDK have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

  • Added a drop-down list in the SDK Launcher that allows the user to switch between The Orange Box engine and the Half-Life 2: Episode One engine
  • Two new lighting preview modes are available in Hammer
  • Models are automatically centered when loaded in Faceposer
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed crash and corrupt configurations for users that donโ€™t own any Orange Box games
  • Resolved issues with building models for any games that that use the Half-Life 2:Episode 1 engine
  • Fixed crashes in Hammer and Faceposer when HL2 is set to the active game

Known Issues
  • Cannot create shortcuts to Hammer, Faceposer, and Model Viewer
  • Linux makefiles for the Orange Box source code are incomplete and will be updated in the next release
  • The Particle Editor is not presently included in the Source SDK
  • SDK shader code only included with mods built to use Half-Life 2:Episode 1

Updates to the Source Engine and SourceTV have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The full change list can be found below:

Source Engine
  • Refactored how lightmaps are downloaded to the graphics card at level load. On some hardware configurations this can lower level load times significantly
  • Optimized some particle systems to improve performance on some hardware configurations
  • Player stats are now sent up as they change, rather than when the player dies
  • Improved playback of sub-frame sounds
  • Fixed a crash caused by alt-tabs during map load
  • Eliminated unnecessary temporary memory allocation in scenefilecache
SourceTV
  • SourceTV now uses a hidden slot on the game server. This allows for 24 player servers to also have a SourceTV proxy connected to it
  • Fixed Pyro's flamethrower flames not showing up in SourceTV

Valve has announced the release of Steamworks, a complete suite of publishing and development tools โ€“ ranging from copy protection to social networking services to server browsing. SteamWorks is now available free of charge to developers and publishers worldwide.
Steamworks, the same suite of tools used in best-selling PC titles Half-Life 2 and The Orange Box, is available for all PC games distributed via retail and leading online platforms such as Steam. The services included in Steamworks may be used a la carte or in any combination.
